Benefits of Organic Yoga Clothing, Part 1

All across this straining globe of ours, people are increasingly trading conventionally-produced goods for their organic counterparts. From food on the table, to liquor on the bar, to paint on the walls, more of us are saying “no” to chemicals and “yes” to a more natural way of life.   Browse affordable organic yoga apparel.

Organic clothing is also becoming more popular. You may consider organic blazers and top coats slightly overzealous; however items that come in direct contact with the skin, such as tee-shirts, undergarments, exercise and yoga apparel make a lot of sense particularly from a health standpoint.

Organic yoga clothing is made from cotton, hemp or bamboo that is grown without any pesticides, herbicides or chemical fertilizers. Organically-grown fibers produce yarn that is softer and more durable, and breathes easier against the skin. These characteristics are especially important in yoga wear.

Take a look at these astonishing cotton-industry facts:

  • Conventional cotton tops the list of chemically-dependent crops, using about 1 quarter of all the agricultural insecticides that are applied every year. Approximately 3/4 of a pound of chemicals are used on the cotton to make 1 pair of jeans; 1/3 of a pound for a regular tee-shirt.
  • Seven of the top 15 pesticides used on U.S. cotton crops are potential or known human carcinogens, according to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).
  • The insecticides and pesticides that are used to grow cotton travel far and wide. They seep into the soil as the fiber is grown; touches our skin when it’s worn; and contaminates the water when it’s washed.According to the World Health Organization (WHO), 20,000 people in developing countries, many of whom work in the cotton farming industry, die from pesticide poisoning each year.
  • Forced child labor is rampant in conventional cotton farming in developing countries.

While these statistics are sobering, evidence of a shift is growing: Organic cotton grown by farmers worldwide increased 152% during the 2007-2008 crop year, according to the Organic Cotton Farm and Fiber Report 2008 released by Organic Exchange. In 2006, organic fiber linens and clothing sales in the United States grew by 26 % over the previous year, to reach $203 million, according to the Organic Trade Association’s 2007 Manufacturer Survey.

  1. Organic clothing is no longer suited just for hippies — high fashion and big brands are going green, too. Organic cotton, which makes up 95 percent of organic fabrics, is the driving force behind the trend. The look and feel of the clothes are so fashion-forward that many clients don’t even realize they’re buying organic.
