Solar Plexus Chakra: Stand Up For Your Beliefs
(Part 1: What Are The Chakras?)

Solar Plexus Chakra
Each day, we are required to make decisions and take steps to implement them. Your ability to decide confidently and act resolutely is governed by your third chakra: the Solar Plexus Chakra.
The Solar Plexus Chakra is the area of assertiveness and intuition. As individuals, we each have our own unique perception of right and wrong. We feel strongly about certain issues; others not so much. The third chakra is the inner-drive that propels us to speak up in disagreements; stand up for that in which we believe; and take risks when our gut tells us it is the right thing to do.
Solar Plexus Chakra Basis:
- Color: golden yellow
- Element: fire
- Location: abdomen
- Associated body parts: stomach, liver, gallbladder, spleen, adrenal glands
- Basic issues: ego, self-esteem, vitality, forcefulness, perception, insight, will, discipline
- Gemstones and crystals: citrine, jasper, topaz
- Flower essences: chamomile, goldenrod, pink yarrow
- Essential oils: black pepper, ginger, peppermint
- Food: complex carbohydrates (e.g., whole grains, beans)
Signs of Unbalanced Third Chakra:
Individuals with Solar Plexus Chakra imbalances exhibit low self-esteem and have trouble making decisions. When they do make a decision, action comes slowly or never. This person is hypersensitive to criticism and alternatively overly critical of others.
Someone with a reverse imbalance must always be right and feel dominant in every conflict. They often feel unfairly wronged, which leads to vast amounts of time plotting their self-perceived vindication. A constant undercurrent of anger is typically accompanied by the pursuit of perfection and fear of rejection. Apathy and resentment towards others are also common.
Physical issues that sometimes manifest due to third chakra imbalances include digestive problems, food allergies, diabetes, ulcers, liver problems, jaundice, hepatitis, gallstones, adrenal imbalances and arthritis. Typical addictions are sugar, caffeine, food, and compulsive cleaning.
Balancing the Solar Plexus Chakra:
A balanced Solar Plexus Chakra brings a strong sense of identity and healthy self-respect. We have the energy and confidence to pursue our ideas and follow tasks through to completion. We don’t feel threatened by opposition; instead, we are calm and receptive, and willing to work towards a solution that benefits all involved.
The next time you find yourself in a power conflict, stop for a second and ask yourself “Am I really being threatened?” If the answer is no, ask yourself “Do I really care about the outcome?” If the answer is “Yes” to either of these questions, then this issue is certainly yours to battle and you should do so honorably. However, if you are not truly threatened and don’t care about the outcome, expending negative energy trying to change the outcome would not be worthwhile.
Other third chakra balancing techniques include:
- Vigorous exercises including power yoga, aerobics, swimming, power walking, biking;
- Holding or wearing citrine, jasper, topaz gemstones. See chakra jewelry;
- When you feel you need a push or need to stop incessant negative chatter in your mind, visualize the third chakra and breathe deeply into your solar plexus.
