The newest yoga dvd in my collection, Yoga: Gentle Vinyasa Flow with Zyrka Landwijt, helps build flexibility, strength and stamina with a relatively small daily time commitment.

Here’s why I like it so much:

1. Organization: This yoga DVD includes 6 routines of varying lengths and difficulty levels.  Each routine builds on the foundation of the prior, shorter routine:

•Series A for Beginners: 38 minutes, 47 minutes and 62 minutes

•Series B for Beginner / Intermediate: 36 minutes, 50 minutes and 64 minutes

2. Pose Guide. Zyrka gives detailed demonstrations for each pose, plus tips to maximize benefits.

3. “Extras” Guide. This section includes 3 more features that are especially helpful to beginner yoga practitioners:

•“Vinyasa Guidelines” demonstrates the connection between movement and breath as you shift from pose-to-pose during a Vinyasa sequence.

“Breathing practice” delves into the importance of  proper breathing techniques.

•”Attitude” is a quick reminder to approach your mat with peace and receptivity to get the most out of your practice.

4. Music: The guide background music is a beautiful, somewhat haunting melody featuring piano and flute. First thing in the morning when I’m the only person awake in the house, I put this music on, pour myself a cup of coffee and sit by the fireplace for prayer and meditation before practicing. This nearly always assures a good start to the day.

I have 1 complaint about this DVD: The final relaxation segment is too long. When you being lying in Savasana, Zyrka tries to help you eradicate meandering thoughts by having you concentrate on every part of the body. Then she literally proceeds to name every part of the right side of the body……. then the left side. Being an A-type, savasana is a hard for me to maintain for very long. I prefer a much briefer final relaxation.
