Yoga Props: Yoga blankets are highly versatile and comfy!
Many instructors agree: Yoga blankets are just about the most versatile yoga prop to aid you in your practice. They can be
folded to achieve various heights and are extremely comfortable to lie, sit, or kneel upon. Here are a few examples of how they can be used:
- Fold a yoga blanket in half and place the edge just underneath your tail bone during seated forward bends. This will elevate your spine and give you a slight pitch forward.
- For Child’s pose, Camel, modified lunges, or any other kneeling pose, fold your yoga blanket once or twice and place it under your knees to eliminate discomfort.
- Some yoga students like to place blankets over their mats for extra cushion, or keep them nearby during savasana (final relaxation) in case they feel chilled.
- Fold a yoga blanket multiple times and use in place of a bolster during restorative poses or as support during shoulder stands.
Yoga blanket selection: keep in mind these important features:
- Material: Mexican wool or tightly-woven cotton blankets are generally the best because they provide a non-slip surface.
- Weight: You want something heavy that will not move around. Most yoga blankets weigh between 2.6 and 3.6 lbs.
- Size: Yoga blankets should be large enough to cover your entire body in case you feel chilled during final relaxation. Average size is approximately 80” x 50”; extra large are also offered by some yoga prop manufacturers.
- Pattern: Yoga blankets come in a variety of colors and patterns, so why not choose something pleasing to your individual eye?
