I did a bit of research and it seems that, yes, breast cancer survivors, even those with lymphedema, a breast cancer-related swelling of the arm, are now being encouraged to proactively build up arm strength. (See this CNN health article.) Yoga poses that can "add iron to your guns" include Chaturanga Dandasana (4-limbed staff pose); Adho Mukha Svanasana (Downward-Facing Dog Pose); Urdhva Mukha Svanasana (Upward-Facing Dog Pose); and Vasisthasana (Side Plank Pose).

It may be dangerous unless you have a non-skid shower mat. If you do, then definitely stick to standing poses.

I've now heard that breast cancer survivors Should lift weights and exercise the affected side ( arm) to make it stronger, and help your overall posture. They used to say "be careful" with that arm. Can you confirm this new recommendation, and if it's true, what yoga poses would be beneficial as well? - ellie, NYC
