I like the new format of your website! I’ve recently started using a large exercise ball and wonder if a yoga mat should be placed underneath it?
Also, it would be great if you could show pictures of different exercises that you can carry out with the ball for various issues “opening hips, arm strength, cervical spine stretching etc…Thanks for a great website from an interested Yoga Beginner! -shelly

Hi Shelly! Glad you like our new look. Yes, you should definitely use a yoga mat underneath a balance ball to help keep you from slipping and falling off the ball. Your suggestion for a “balance ball picture guide” is a good one— we’re putting it on our “to-do” list (which is now 10 miles long :) Suggestions are greatly appreciated so please keep them coming.

Hi Yoga-Dojo! One more thing: is a yoga blanket better than a yoga mat or do I need both??

Hi Shell! Your question is very timely— We’ll be posting tips on using yoga blankets later this week. Meanwhile, here’s a “down and dirty” answer: A yoga blanket provides extra comfort when a mat isn’t enough to cushion your knees, for example “Camel’s Pose”, “Hero Pose”, “Child’s Pose” and many more. It can also act as a bolster— simply fold it up a few more times. Yoga blankets are probably the most versatile yoga prop. But I definitely wouldn’t use one in place of a yoga mat— that’s a non-negotiable. :)

Update: On Oct. 4th, we published this post on using yoga blankets.
